IN-School labs: Problem-Based and Project-Based Science

For schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, our instructors come to you and teach K-12 science!

**The 3 components of the QC’s In-School Labs

  1. 1-3 hours of labs each week

  2. 1-2 hour of videos, readings, and problems sets each week

  3. We bring all of the lab materials and supplies

**About QC’s unique and proven pedagogy

  1. Lab-centered, not screen-based or simulation based

  2. Emphasis on student discovery and interaction

  3. Each course culminates in student-driven projects that apply real world concepts

**Each course unlocks a story of discovery

For example, in “Periodic Table”, 7th and 8th graders replicate experiments and make discoveries as did Dmitri Mendeleev in the 1860s

  1. They melt ore and extract pure copper: Deduce that it cannot be broken down further and therefore is an element

  2. They isolate pure oxygen and hydrogen gases: Test reactivity of colorless, odorless gases to determine their identity

  3. They explore chemical reactivity and processes: Determine atomic mass of metals and gases

  4. They collect and interpret data to identify patterns: Group elements by their reactivity and properties

  5. Ultimately, your students re-assemble the periodic table, and thereby own it, for themselves!

**A description of a QC lab:

Every lab flows through a sequence carefully designed to heighten learning outcomes:

  1. LAUNCH: Instructors pose a science or math problem. Key concepts are reviewed and instructors lead short socratic discussions to review previous concepts and scaffold the upcoming lab work.

  2. LAB: Students begin lab work - formulating and testing hypotheses, making discoveries, recording data, and revising hypotheses. This work happens in small groups, where QC instructors serve as facilitators guiding, challenging, and leading students towards drawing sound and relevant conclusions.

  3. LANDING: From these conclusions, QC instructors facilitate student discussion of the results of their lab work. Instructors help students classify and engage with their findings by discovering, naming, and understanding concepts from relevant math and science fields.

**Additional integrations:

  1. PROJECT WORK: Inspired by the weekly classroom labs, students conduct their own research and complete application projects.

  2. EXTENSIONS: We provide students a learning platform consisting of activities, weekly summaries, readings, videos, and problems sets. This suite of resources is tethered to the concepts discovered in each lab and is designed to support and enrich each laboratory experience.

  3. ASSESSMENTS: QC is happy to collaborate with your school to structure assessments aligned to your needs.
