Teachers and Microschools

The Easiest Way Ever to Run Hands-On Science

What Your School Gets:

  • Awesome short courses — each one is a whirlwind journey through a fascinating and important science topic.

  • Each short course includes:

    • 5 chapters of videos, readings, and lab challenges — we set the context and invite you into the journey

    • 5 problem sets — great way to check your own understanding of the big ideas

    • A digital lab notebook for entering hypothesis and lab write-ups — students must think and convey their inferences and conclusions

    • 5 sets of extension links — students can bone up, review, and research a wide set of related topics through web links to videos, simulations, and readings we curated

  • Lab supply kits — the only way to do science right! (real equipment, not just plastic stuff)

  • Login to the QC course platform — we can provide up to 30 logins per group

  • 24-hour response-time email support — questions do arise on lab procedures and we can help troubleshoot, and we can schedule a call or zoom to work through something more complex. The bottom line is that we are here to make sure the science experience at Catalyst is successful and highly enriching for the students.

How-It-Works for the Student

Each short course is five chapters and each chapter consists of two labs. Student will do 60 labs over the course of a year! Each lab follows a “launch → lab → landing” sequence.

There are 3 primary ways to assess and provide feedback:

  1. Login.

  2. Launch. Students should gather their supplies, read the lab challenge, watch the video, and read the launch article.

  3. Hypothesis. Students should submit a hypothesis

  4. Lab. Students do the lab!

  5. Writeup. Students should submit responses to the writeup questions.

  6. Landing. Students watch the video and read the landing article.

  7. At the end of each chapter there are two things to do:

    • Peruse a set of curated links to additional videos and readings.

    • Do a problem set

The Expectation of QC Science Courses

Perfection, getting right answers, or taking tests is not the objective! Science has always been simply about working to make sense of data and observations from laboratory experiments.

Each short course is a series of lab challenges where understanding crystallizes over time. After all, real scientists navigate through the unknown and make inferences as they can. This is the same experience we attempt to create.

Of course, along the way we provided detailed accounts of accepted (textbook) science, so that students can track the evolution of ideas. Further, we provide an extensive curated list of web readings and videos. So students can really go as deep as they want.

Works for Flipped, Virtual, Personalized, and Conventional Classrooms

Imagine meandering (virtually or in-person) through your classroom of engaged students, exploring ideas, corralling groups only when necessary, celebrating failure, and encouraging students to make bold hypotheses

You will have more time to build relationships with your students as they advance through challenging and engaging content.

  • QC Courses are video guided and teacher mediated. There is no need to prepare for lectures.

  • Student work is digitally compiled and organized for review/tracking/grading.

  • Lab write-up prompts are already prepared

  • Problem-sets  are automatically graded
