Description of DIY Computer Workshop

The DIY Computer Workshop is a one day event where students are walked through the entire process of how to build their own computer from the ground up and then take it home!

DIY Computer is a way for you to connect to computers, understand how they function and how to fix them. DIY helps you understand:

  • structure and purpose of computer components
  • computer operation control
  • operating systems
  • simple networking
  • process of upgrading

Computers are integrated into every aspect of our modern technical culture. If your student is interested in a career of tomorrow then knowing how to maintenance computer hardware and do simple technical software management is a must. These skills can be simply learned in a period of just six hours on a weekend day.

For students wanting to move into advanced programming, there is no substitute for the programming environment of a linux distribution. Through the use of linux students will familiarize themselves with the underpinnings of our modern networking capabilities and the most advanced security methods available today.

Outline of the day:

  • First three hours spent building the computer.
  • 30 minute break for lunch
  • Last three hours spent installing and learning the operating system.

The DIY Computer Workshop is appropriate for students 11 years and older who are able to focus for long periods of time on complicated assignments.
